Cost of Public Transport in Warsaw

In this article we are going to cover the costs and difference between monthly passes and single tickets so you can select the right method of travel for you and we’ll also cover what you need to know to either buy a ticket or a monthly pass.

If you’re moving to Warsaw for longer than three months then we highly recommend purchasing a monthly pass. If you’re just visiting Warsaw for a short amount of time then we highly recommend skipping to the ‘Single use tickets Explained’ section.

Monthly Passes Explained

A monthly passes offers the best value for money if you regularly need to use the public transport system in Warsaw. A monthly pass from ZTM (the city transport provider) will give you unlimited access to the city trams, buses and metro. This also includes unlimited access to the night services which will save you a lot of money on taxis.
There are two monthly passes available:

– 30-day personal ticket 110,00 PLN
– 90-day personal ticket 280,00 PLN

100 PLN = 24 EURO

To buy this type of ticket in the ticket machine you will need to issue a Warsaw City Card. To have this card you will need to fill the online form in English on this website:

https://personalizacja.ztm.waw.pl/?l=2

The waiting time for issuing personalized Warsaw City Card is approximately 4 business days. After you receive email that you card is ready, you can pick your card up in passenger service points. They are located on biggest train stations, airport and metro stations. The addresses you can find here:

http://www.ztm.waw.pl/pop.php?c=500&l=2

Depending on the member of staff you get they might not speak English so here is the sentence ‘Hello, I need to collect my Warsaw City Card. My name is [NAME HERE]’ in Polish. Write this phrase on a piece of paper and hand it over with your passport:

Witam, chcę odebrać swoją kartę miejską. Mam na imię [NAME HERE]

Issue of the first Card is free of charge, but if you lose or damage your card then the next one costs 14,00 PLN.

Once a card has been issued to you then you do not need to re-visit the same location point to top up your card after the 30 or 90 days expires. You can visit any ticket machine (outside of a tram or bus) and using the contact-less system simply tap your card on the reader and follow the on-screen instructions. The ticket machines are available in English, Russian, German and Polish.

Single use tickets Explained

Single use tickets are perfect for people who are only visiting the city for a short amount of time or for someone that needs travel via public transport everyday.

Bus, trams and metros ran by ZTM all accept the same transport tickets. These tickets are based on time and you can purchase:

– 20 minute – 3,40 PLN
– 75 minutes – 4,40 PLN
– 90 minutes – 7,00 PLN
– 24 hours – 15,00 PLN
– Weekend ticket (7:00 PM on Friday till 8:00 AM on Monday) 24,00 PLN
– Group weekend ticket (up to 5 people to unlimited number of journeys from 7:00 PM on Friday till 8:00 AM on Monday) 40,00 PLN

5 PLN = 1 EURO

When you enter a bus, tram or metro ticket you’ll need to put your ticket inside the yellow ticket validating machine. You’ll hear a short beep and see a green light to show you that the ticket has been correctly accepted. If you get a red light then simply re-try your ticket if it is unused or try another one of the other yellow ticket validating machines.

When you enter your ticket the timer will automatically start and you are responsible for keeping a track of the time. If you lose track of the time you first use your ticket you can check if it is valid or not by re-entering it inside the yellow ticket validation machine and it will tell you with the red or green light system if it is still valid or not. Also the time the ticket expires can be found stamped in black ink on the back of the ticket when you validate it.

Error messages – Validate an incorrect ticket

If, after inserting the ticket into the validating machine, the ticket is returned without validation, a red light illuminates and one long beep sounds, it could be one of the following cases:

“BILET NIEWAŻNY” (INVALID TICKET) – a single fare ticket, already validated, has been inserted.

“BILET JUŻ WYKORZYSTANY” (TICKET ALREADY USED) – concerns time-limit or seasonal tickets. Part of them is secured from double validation in one means of transport (e.g. in order to open the metro entrance gate by more than one person).

“BILET PRZETERMINOWANY” (OVERDUE TICKET) – an expired time-limit or seasonal ticket has been inserted.

“BILET NIECZYTELNY” (UNREADABLA TICKET) – record on the magnetic strip is unreadable. This may be due to a physical damage to the ticket preventing the data coded on the magnetic strip from being read correctly, however it may also be the case that the ticket has been inserted with the magnetic stripe directed upwards. If a correct ticket has been inserted in a correct manner, this may be due to a failure of the validating machine.

“ZBYT KRÓTKI BILET” (TICKET TOO SHORT) – the ticket may be creased, folded, cut or incorrectly inserted into the validating machine.

“BILET ZATRZYMANY”
(TICKET RETAINED) – the ticket has been incorrectly inserted into the validating machine (held or pushed, etc.).

“BILET ZASTRZEŻONY” (TICKET BLOCKED) – the ticket should be submitted to one of Punkt Obsługi Pasażerów ZTM (ZTM Passengers Service Centres).

Travelling without a valid ticket

The metro system in Warsaw requires you to enter a ticket or press your monthly card on the reader to enter the station platform.

The buses and trams do not work on the same system and run based on an honesty system. You must validate your ticket yourself and there is no instant check done. Please beware that ZTM does random spot checks on all forms of transport. These checks are completely random and they are undertaken morning, afternoon and night. If you’re found to be travelling without a valid travel ticket (this includes if your time has ran out) then you’ll be ask to leave the tram/bus/metro and the ticket inspector will request some form of I.D (passport). If you cannot produce some I.D they will call a local police office to come and check your name and address through a police computer to confirm you say who you say you are. If you do have I.D they will begin writing out a ticket for you. If you are willing to pay there and then on the spot in cash or via the bank card machines they carry you will pay a 159,60 PLN fine. If you cannot pay right away then the fine will increase to 266,00 PLN and you’ll need to visit your nearest ZTM office to pay

150 PLN = 35 EURO
260 PLN = 62 EURO
