Praga Południe district distributes FREE anti-smog masks

The district office of Praga Południe prepared anti-smog masks for the residents. First of all, they will be given to seniors, pregnant women and young mothers.

The masks will be handed out from December 11 by employees of the district office, Social Welfare Center and the Polish Union of Pensioners from the Praga South branch.

Each has a special pocket that allows the use of a replaceable anti-smog filter, which has an attestation confirming the PM1, 2.5, 4 and PM 10 dust retention efficiency.

Not for children

Ewelina Lanc from the district office explains in a message sent to the editorial office, she explains why the masks will not be distributed first to children.

“If a person is under the age of 10, we should consult a family doctor if the child can wear an anti-smog mask.” Breathing can become more difficult – less air is entering the lungs than usual, which may have some consequences for their development. Incorrect wearing of a mask can threaten to suffocate your child “

Directors of kindergartens have also been given permission to “make autonomous decisions that on the days when the intensity of dust is too large, children do not go outside”.

What is smog?

Air pollution, which is smog, arises from the release of harmful chemical compounds into the atmosphere, such as sulfur oxides and nitric oxide and solid substances, i.e. suspended particulates. Suspended particulate matter may contain toxic substances such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g. benzo / a / pyrene), heavy metals and dioxins and furans

The most dangerous for health are particles PM 2.5 (contains particles with a diameter less than 2.5 microns) and PM10 (diameter less than 10 micrometers). These molecules can reach the upper respiratory tract, lungs and penetrate into the blood

Smog contributes to an increased risk of respiratory infections and exacerbation of symptoms of allergic diseases, eg asthma, hay fever and conjunctivitis. Increased concentrations of dust in the last days are recorded throughout the entire province, and the reason for the phenomenon is to start the heating season and unfavorable meteorological conditions – weak wind and no precipitation.
